“This piece is inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog, his speed, and the game. The stripes of white you see in the Amethyst crystal remind me of the bright blue band of light that followed Sonic when he ran fast, and the swirls of the metal are smooth like the movements and agility of Sonic when he runs, jumps, fights, and curls himself up into a ball to attack enemies with the spikes on his head. Sonic was my favorite character to play in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, one of the games of choice I used to always play with my cousins. Some of the happiest times of my life were when I was younger than 10 years old, when I’d run through my cousin Touré’s house with blue marker stripes we had drawn on our arms with dry-erase markers, thinking we were Sonic, running around the house, seeing who could run faster (my cousin would always be faster, he is 3 years older than me), and our grandma would yell at us, ‘Stop running in my house!’ and then she’d cook a warm meal for us after we had calmed down and finished playing. Our grandma passed in 2016. My cousin Touré is about to be a doctor now, I’m a Jeweler.”
